Zoning an Open Network for Education (ZONE)

Project:
The goal of the ZONE project is to document and lay the foundation for a layered security model approach to the security challenges using firewall / routers. Location identification of offending computers, even when functioning with dynamic IP addresses, is another goal. The ZONE project has been designed to work in collaboration with the NIDS and GRATIS efforts.

Outcome:
The project uses the concept of partitioning a network so that the resultant sub-networks can be more easily managed and isolated, either permanently or temporarily in the event of a network anomaly.
Several zones were created at the IIT Rice campus with the intention of expanding the project in the future to other key areas of the campus. In addition, remote manageability was added to allow ease of use for network administrators.

All network devices used in this effort were selected to be highly customizable and manageable while still being low in cost.

The project was presented to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) on May 12, 2005 as part of an IEEE student colloquium.
